Hazardous Manual Tasks: Workstation Setup

AIMS

Every business has the overarching duty under the WHS Act to ensure a safe working environment for all its employees, and that the employees are provided with enough information and instruction to be able to perform their jobs safely. This includes staff who use computers at workstations.

Hazardous manual tasks are one of the main causes of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in NSW. MSDs are a significant concern for individuals who work at computers, as prolonged sedentary work can lead to various health issues.

MSDs include a wide range of injuries and diseases of the human body. Common examples include:

  • carpal tunnel syndrome

  • tendonitis

  • muscle / tendon strain

  • rotator cuff injuries

  • ruptured or herniated discs in the spine.

Proper workstation setup is crucial to prevent MSDs

Courtenell’s Hazardous Manual Tasks (Workstation Setup) Workshop has been designed to educate participants in setting up their workstation and working safely in adherence with manual handling and ergonomic principles.

The course also provides a brief overview of the overarching legal requirement of organisations to ensure “the provision of any information, training, instruction or supervision that is necessary to protect all persons from risks to their health and safety arising from work carried out as part of the conduct of the business or undertaking” and accountability of staff for applying manual task principles in their work.
