Storage and Handling of Dangerous Goods

The aim of Courtenell’s one-day course on storage and handling of dangerous goods and hazardous substances is to provide workers who are involved in the storage, handling, transport, or management of dangerous goods and hazardous substances with the knowledge and practical skills required to perform these tasks safely and in compliance with legal requirements.

 

The course covers hazard identification systems, risk management principles, safe storage and handling practices, emergency response arrangements, and documentation and record-keeping obligations. Practical demonstrations and scenario-based activities are incorporated to reinforce learning and support effective application in the workplace.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

  • Identify dangerous goods and hazardous substances using recognised classification and communication systems, including Global Harmonised System (GHS), IMDG Code, and HAZCHEM.

  • Apply relevant legislative and organisational requirements relating to the storage, handling, and management of dangerous goods and hazardous substances.

  • Assess hazards and control risks associated with dangerous goods using appropriate risk management principles and the hierarchy of controls.

  • Select and correctly use task-specific personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for different chemical hazards and work activities.

  • Follow safe storage and handling procedures, including segregation, compatibility requirements, and safe work practices.

  • Implement correct load handling and shifting techniques, including safe manual handling and the use of appropriate equipment.

  • Respond effectively to emergency situations, including chemical spills, fires, and first aid incidents involving hazardous substances.

  • Maintain required compliance records and documentation, including manifests, registers, inspections, and reporting obligations.

1 day (full course) or 1/2 day (awareness course)
