Crystalline Silica Exposure and Prevention (4 hrs)

Why do this course?
While recent regulatory changes, including the 2024 prohibition on the manufacture, supply, processing, and installation of engineered stone, have significantly reduced exposure in some areas, many workplaces will continue to encounter crystalline silica in both legacy products and alternative materials.

Supervisors, workers, line managers, and health and safety representatives must be provided with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Identify materials containing crystalline silica

  • Understand the associated health risks

  • Apply appropriate control measures

A clear understanding of safe handling practices remains essential to preventing exposure and ensuring compliance with current WHS requirements.

Course Aims

Courtenell’s “Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention” course has been designed in line with SafeWork NSW's recommended training criteria for working with respirable crystalline silica. The course aligns with the requirements of the NSW WHS Regulation by addressing health risks, hazard identification, exposure pathways, control measures, the use of respiratory protective equipment, housekeeping practices, the interpretation of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manufacturer information relating to silica-containing products, and awareness of air and health monitoring obligations. It provides workers who may be exposed to RCS with information and instruction on how to work safely with silica products in the workplace.

Who Should Do the Course?
  • Construction industry workers e.g. sandblasting, rock drilling, cutting brick, tile, concrete, stone benchtops, fibre cement sheeting, pavers etc.

  • Waste management workers, e.g landfill personnel, waste disposal services, waste transport services,

  • Manufacturing industry workers e.g. concrete manufacturing, foundry operations, oil and gas, asphalt production, metal polishing, pottery work, jewellers

  • Transport industry workers e.g. railroad workers
